Steven Moffat of Doctor Who made it clear at a press meeting held on the 21st march 2012, that Coleman would take over the role of Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat claimed that he selected Coleman to play the role of companion because she would perform best alongside Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she talked faster than Smith.
